Marriage Therapy and Couples Counseling

Are you and your partner thinking about getting help for your relationship?

The relationship between you and your partner is critically important in maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life.  This relationship is the foundation of our families and a great source of love, friendship and joy.  It has the potential to provide a “safe haven” which will allow you to feel grounded and more equipped to handle the ups and downs of life.  However, communication styles, experiences from our own family of origin, parenthood, finances, and everyday life often interfere and prevent these relationships from thriving.

Arguments typically become repetitive, painful, and seem unsolvable.  There is often a pattern or way of communicating that may not be apparent to you, but that is the real source of the tension you experience.  It is important to discover the heart of the matter so that it is easier to gain a sense of understanding and compassion for yourself and your partner.  Couples counseling is designed to help you do just that. This is what makes it possible for you to develop new ways of interacting, ultimately allowing you and your relationship to evolve and thrive.

Understand that some therapists that say they “see couples” may not the same thing as knowing how to work with couples skillfully. Not every therapist has the ability to work with the unique interactions that couples bring to the session. Do not play “Russian roulette” with your marriage by picking a random therapist! I have specialized training and experience in couples counseling.  I also consider myself a “marriage friendly” therapist who will not give up on you and simply recommend divorce.  I continue to attend on-going training and seek consultation as needed to make sure that I stay current in this field of practice.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is a proven and effective treatment for distressed couples and families. This is backed by extensive research. EFT for couples is one of the few therapies that is proven to help couples get back to their loving feelings, be connected, secure and happy in their relationship.

EFT works by helping couples to strengthen their connection and attachment bond as well as break bad communication patterns. Having strong connection and a safe attachment means several things: couples feel safe together, know they are the most important person to their partner, are more flexible in problem-solving, more skilled at communication, and feel connected to one another. The same old fight is finally resolved! The walls that kept you away from each other come down and the feelings that brought you together, in the beginning, revive and grow.

If you and your partner get caught in the same old argument over and over or if you feel distant from your partner, this treatment can help. It is a model that gets right to the heart of the matter. There is no (or minimal) “homework” as you will be making these changes right during your session.

EFT has been found to be the most effective treatment method to date with numerous peer-reviewed articles to prove it. As a model of couples therapy, it is considered the “gold standard” as no other form of couple therapy has surpassed current research (including comparisons to Gottman Method and Imago).  With a highly trained EFT Therapist, unlike most couples treatment, you will not need to be in counseling for years either. It is generally a shorter term model (6 – 8 months average).  The other very important piece is that these results have also been long-lasting. No other therapy treatment approach to treat couples in distress has matched these results!

Please check the website dedicated to this, These workshops are a fantastic way to learn skills to work on your relationship. It is also perfect for those wishing to enhance or deepen their connection. It is not recommended for highly distressed relationships. The Creating Connection/Hold Me Tight relationship enhancement workshop is also based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and is presented all over the country.

Recommended Reading: Hold Me Tight or Love Sense, both books by Dr. Sue Johnson.

A relationship intensive (or retreat) is a weekend-long in depth therapy experience geared towards highly distressed relationships and/or those wishing to jump-start the treatment process. If you are interested in an intensive, please go to the website for details and booking information.
